Favorite story this year: Shadowboxing. I spent the whole summer writing it and I loved how it all came together.

Most popular story this year: I’m not sure. The whole hits and reviews thing can be misleading depending if something has more than one chapter.

Based on hits for a one-shot: The Gift.
Based on reviews/bookmarks: Shadowboxing

Most underappreciated by the universe: N/A

Most fun story: Shadowboxing

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Shadowboxing. I didn’t realize how much Steve and Matt had in common until I began writing them.

Hardest story to write: Sensorium. It took me forever to write because of the level of detail I wanted to immerse the reader into Matt’s world and his heightened level of senses.

Biggest disappointment: Reluctant Allies (Or the Time Frank Had to Bring Home the Devil). I know it was my first attempt at Daredevil, but I think I’d re-write whole chunks now because I feel like I’d have a better handle on Frank’s character.

Biggest surprise: Kākou. This was a gift-fic, so I was given the prompt, but I immensely lovely writing it. Such a thoughtful, heartbreaking idea that I felt turned into something pretty beautiful.

Most telling story: The Gift. I love Steve and Danny so much and this type of story is really in my wheelhouse.

Overall: It was nice to branch out into another fandom like Daredevil and further into cross-over territory with Captain America. But it was nice to bookend the year with H50.

Ambitions for next year: I’ve been tempted to dabble in Rogue One and Lethal Weapon, but I think I’ll stick with H50 and DD. I’ve been writing fanfic for a very long time and I always will. But I want to see what happens when I take the same time and energy into something of my own.So, I’ll work on a mix of both.

This is such a great mix, long with a varied mix of downtempo/chill to get really lost in while writing or studying whatever your brain needs.

I got this in my inbox on Tumblr a few months ago, but I was in the middle of writing a long story and put it on the back-burner. So, I finally have the time to answer it properly!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers (◠‿◠✿) (I’m not tagging own anyone since this is an old meme, but feel free to create one of your own!)

Fandom:H50
Title: Still the Rain
http://archiveofourown.org/works/898279
Relationship: Steve/Danny
Summary: Danny turned around until he faced Steve McGarrett, Danger Magnet. "Mountain cliffs; dinghies in the middle of the ocean; nightmare camping trips. You had to add a rainforest adventure during a monsoon to the list, didn't you?"
A/N: I love writing survival stories with a large dose of realism. Steve and Danny both get to utilize their skill sets and experience to survive a crash-landing during a monsoon. It had a nice combo of angst, humor, h/c, and romance.

Fandom: H50
Title: Beneath the Trident
http://archiveofourown.org/works/553601
Characters/Relationship: Steve/Danny
Summary: Steve and Danny go undercover to investigate the death of a SEAL before a sensitive joint Special Forces’ operation. With Steve as the SEALs' new team leader and Danny as the reporter assigned to shadow him, Danny finally gets to see the hidden depths of the real Lt. Commander McGarrett.
Set between 2.22 and 2.23.
A/N: This is my most popular story in the fandom. I love Danny getting an inside look at Steve’s military side while the two of them are undercover during SEAL Team training exercises. I adore writing from Danny’s POV and it gave me a chance to really explore both men in an interesting way.

Fandom: H50
Title: Distant Shores
http://archiveofourown.org/works/295770
Relationship: Steve/Danny with Chin Ho Kelly
Summary: WWII Pacific Theater based AU.
A/N: This is my favorite story in the fandom. It’s a slow burn relationship under the stress of war. I wanted to immerse the reader into the era and make them sweat in the heat, flinch at the bombs, and go on these intense missions with the guys.

Fandom: Daredevil and Captain America
Title: Shadowboxing
http://archiveofourown.org/works/8134879
Characters: Steve Rogers, Matt Murdock, Other Marvel Characters
Summary: It doesn’t matter how many times you fall – what matters most is how many times you get back up. Steve Rogers knew this lesson far too well and it was one Matt Murdock had endured all his life. With both men at their lowest, could a chance friendship bring each of them to their feet again?
A/N: This was my first real foray into the Marvel fandom so of course I wrote a crossover. Both Steve and Matt have more in common than many realize. It was fascinating to explore a slow burn friendship as both men come to terms about mistakes and struggle to find hope in their current lives. There are also conversations about boxing and legal analysis of the Accords.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Title: Red Sands
http://archiveofourown.org/works/5716741
Characters: John Sheppard, Ronon Dex
Summary: Stranded on a harsh, desolate world, John and Ronon learn that merely surviving is only half the fight.
A/N: This story took a year to write and edit. The friendship between John and Ronon was always my favorite and I wanted to strip everything away from them and put them through the grinder because that is what I like to do. This is a gritty survival story with a helping of world-building and my homage to some of my favorite Sci-fi things.

So, I woke up one morning with an idea. I’ll write a story about Steve Rogers meeting Matt Murdock and the two bond over boxing. Then it morphed into this giant character study exploring things post Captain America: Civil War and Daredevil Season Two. I’m not sure who might read such a crossover, but here it is! It’s written in a way where the reader doesn’t need to know too much about either fandom, so for the curious. Enjoy.

So, I was going to post today about how awesome the first eppy of Mr. Robot was, but instead, I wanted to share these thoughts from Robert Reich-

This morning a majority of the Supreme Court – the four Democratic appointees plus Anthony Kennedy (who wrote the majority opinion) – decided that the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage, under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. The four other Republican appointees dissented, saying the Constitution says nothing on the subject of same-sex marriage. (Of course not; it says nothing on the subject of black children in segregated schools, either. The document was intended to be interpreted.)

Any of you still cynical about the capacity of this nation to embrace social justice should think again. Not long ago, same-sex marriage was abhorrent to a majority of Americans. (In 2002, when I ran for the Democratic nomination for governor of Massachusetts and came out for same-sex marriage, not just civil union, my campaign advisors told me I’d just lost the race.) Yet polls now show most Americans approve of it, 36 states now allow it, and more than 70 percent of Americans live in places where gay couples can marry. Rarely in American history has positive social change on this scale happened so quickly.

There’s another lesson here. The Supreme Court is a powerful agent for good or ill. It often reflects changes in social norms, but not always. Four of the current Supreme Court Justices are over 70 years old. The next president will almost certainly be appointing one or more to replace them. Scalia, Alito, and Thomas are rabid reactionaries, and Roberts isn’t far behind them. If nothing else moves you to become more politically active in the run-up to the 2016 election, this reality alone should.

Despite my growing apathy for current state of big-business-bought politics. 2016 Matters.

So, I saw a cool the seven lines meme going around. I wasn't tagged by anyone, but since I'm just pleased to have a WIP, I decided to play.

It goes like this: you go to page seven (or seventy-seven) of your WIP and select seven lines to post. Then you tag seven other people to play.

I've been writing this H50 piece off and on for months. It's not particularly epic in nature, but I'm just happy that my muse is ready to finish it. Currently at 8k with maybe 2-3 scenes left.

***

Danny nodded. That made sense, but it still didn't explain the letter, or why Steve wouldn't talk about his reasons for dodging something that had always been an important part of his life. Or course, Steve didn’t talk much about anything that weighed him down unless under threat of death.

It was a never-ending struggle, one he'd maybe grapple with again as Danny watched Steve walk inside, his eyes darting toward the officer waiting for him. PO Mason straightened to attention upon Steve's arrival, the two of them disappearing into the office together.

“I should bug it,” Danny muttered.

Chin crossed his arms in front of his chest. “I think Steve would find it.”

“Not if you hid it.”

Mad Max. You did it right.

I must say I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed with this film. I didn't intend to see it, but I'm glad I did. Visually stunning, good action, but I was most taken by the characters. It should be a study on female protagonists, and it felt effortless.

Definite rec. Beware it is violent, but it feels more in tone with the raw feel of the film vs. 'lets see how grotesque we can be.'

The high today was -5°F. Not the wind chill, but the actual temperature. I stayed inside with a blanket while catching up on episodes of Elementary, Person of Interest, and a re-watch of Friday's H50.

Overall thoughts:

I didn't write nearly as much as I'm used to. In fact, this was my lowest volume of output in almost ten years. I had a lot of serious RL issues that hurt my creativity and lead to my first ever long-term stretch of writer's block.

However, my mind space at the time lead to what I believe was my riskiest and most interesting story I've written in a long time. I went outside my comfort zone and I'm happy with the result.

While I'm navigating a new, difficult chapter in my life, I believe I'll slowly continue to find my writing rhythm again.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?:

Much less than normal. Although, I shouldn't shrug at 70k. That is a lot of words. This was a year of quality (I hope) over quantity.

What genre/pairing/fandom did you write that you never would’ve predicted in January?:

I never thought I'd write an AU, future fic, post-apocalypse story! But it really gave me this wonderful canvass to write something gritter and darker, allowing me to branch out to new levels. I felt like I wrote something that was more than just an adventure or romance story. It had layers and pushed me as a writer.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I keep answering things in the previous question. lol

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?

I want to be able to write a one shot or two without it being a lot of effort like I used to. :)

Spread Holiday cheer by leaving thoughtful comments on fanworks of your choice all throughout the month of December.

Let’s face it: fanfic, fanart, fanvids – they take love, dedication and time to make and the creators don’t get paid for it. Fanartists’ payment comes in kudos, likes and – most importantly – comments. Comments lets the artist know what really worked and that they didn’t spend their time, energy and love for nothing.

So how about a little challenge? Give back this December, like a reverse advent calendar. Don’t just leave kudos, likes or whatever other sites offer. Leave at least one thoughtful, in-depth comment on a fanwork of your choice every day throughout December. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you managed that? Just imagine the artist flailing at hearing some well-intended praise for their story, artwork or video – and I can assure you that it will happen. Whether you finally comment on that old favorite of yours, or leave a comment on the work just published minutes ago, you’ll make a fanartist extremely happy.

The last twelve months have been kind of roller coaster for me and I know I missed a lot of art and stories in that time period. I'm not sure if I can do this every day, but I'm going to try an every other day goal. :)
