Austin City Limits presents an epic hour with Nine Inch Nails. The special broadcast airs as a preview of our upcoming milestone 40th Anniversary Season. NIN’s arena-worthy ACL debut showcases ten songs, and will encore during the program’s Season 40, launching in the fall of 2014.

“We’ve waited a long time to do anything like this,” says Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor from the ACL stage. This rare hour of television with the legendary industrial rock band offers a fascinating look at their artistry in a flawless performance filled with unparalleled intensity. NIN’s Reznor and the seven-piece band—Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Robin Finck, Lisa Fischer, Sharlotte Gibson, Pino Palladino and Ilan Rubin—deliver an electrifying set that is a masterpiece of tension and release. Opening with the sultry “All Time Low” from the critically-acclaimed Hesitation Marks, their first album in five years, the band perform tracks from the recent release as well as earlier works, including 1999′s The Fragile. NIN segue into a revamped version of “Sanctified” from the 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine, with the vocal duo of Fischer and Gibson adding soaring depth and texture to the pummeling rhythms throughout the riveting hourlong debut. The cathartic performance comes to a close with a redemptive take on the NIN classic “Hurt”, with Reznor gripping the microphone while howling the confessional lyrics as the Austin audience begs for more.

“We never thought we’d see the day when Nine Inch Nails would set foot on the ACL stage,” says Executive Producer Terry Lickona. “I mean, they never did television for 25 years! I came away from this show having the greatest respect for Trent Reznor. He’s one of the most focused, intense and creative artists I’ve ever worked with.”

Here are a couple full song previews:

This made me smile and laugh. Was it really that long ago? *face palm*

You know what’s awesome? A donkey lamb taxi. That sounds like a band name. Hey, when’s the next Donkey Lamb Taxi show?

When sheep herders in the hills of Lombardy, Italy need to move their flocks toward better grazing land, the wee lambs get a little help keeping up with their woolly family. Helpful donkeys are fitted with sets of special lamb-sized pouches. It’s ridiculously cute and cozy mass transit in the form of live taxis who are content to graze right along side the sheep.

I usually keep the Grammy's on in the background for the performances. Here is a list for this Sunday which looks very intriguing. I always use the Grammy's to try to stay in touch with things since I cling to my Radiohead and NIN cds. :-P

Also, it was just announced that Nine Inch Nails, Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age and Lindsey Buckingham will play together to close the show. \o/

The rest:

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr

Jay-Z and Beyonce

Katy Perry

Taylor Swift

Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons

Robin Thick, Chicago

Pink feat. Nate Ruess

John Legend

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Kacey Musgraves

Keith Urban

Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder

simplyn2deep asked me –As horrible to have to imagine, but say the show is ending and you've been asked to help with the series finale. From what we know of the show up until now, what would you like to see in the finale?

In order to satisfy the network, series finale and all, I'd go big. Five-O stumbles across a major terror plot involving a ship returning from it's six month mission at sea. There are car chases and butting heads with government agencies, and in the end, the team locate the bad guys first because that is what they do.

Out numbered and outgunned, they hold-off dozens of baddies. Kono finds a sweet spot on a communication tower, taking out terrorists while relaying the location and enemy movement.

Chin hot-wires a tank, Steve teaches Danny how to make a bazooka out of pipe and matches, and the three of them blow up a navy facility and save the day. Everyone is injured. The press hails them as heroes which saves them from a political shit storm for – yeah, destroying a million dollar facility. Yes, a million dollars, Steven.

Denning has to play politics while the team recovers together in the same wing of the hospital. Eventuality they get four connecting rooms even though technically, hospitals don't work that way.

In the big twist, we learn Wo Fat was somehow involved, forcing Doris to stop playing spy, turn over evidence on Wo Fat since she was, duh-duh-duh his handler for over twenty years. She does this as a way to make amends to Steve and actually hands over all her files to him, tells him the truth about everything then vows to do whatever it takes to make amends to him and Mary.

Denning breaks the news that after ten years of chaos and keeping the state safe, for the most part, he has to disband Five-O. Even good press can not make up for a million dollar loss. But because he's a sneaky bastard, he starts a new task force, a bigger and better one to carry on the legacy. With members from HPD, S.W.A.T and any other qualified applicants. But he's going to need someone to set it up and fill the positions, maybe even train the new members on Five-O's brand of crazy.

Eventually, Chin accepts a high-level position at IAD in charge of cleaning up police corruption. Kono starts a new career as a lead agent at the local division of Homeland Security. With Grace in high school, Danny prefers not to be shot at as often, so when he's offered Chief of Detectives – he takes it.

And Steve wears the uniform again by taking a teaching position at Pearl Harbor for the SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team.

But throughout the year, during really high profile cases, the Governor of Hawaii thinks his new task force could benefit from four insane consultants he's held on retainer. And every few months Steve, Danny, Kono, and Chin team-up to wreck havoc and blow things up in the name of inner agency cooperation.

It would make an outsider think they missed each other or something, which is funny, because Danny and Steve watch Sunday Night football together. And on Friday nights, Chin is known to drop by Kono's to chat about cases. And the four of them go watch Grace during her baseball games and attend her plays — and they bicker, always bicker during barbeques, poker night, and during any occasion, really.

ignemferam asked me for anything related to Beneath the Trident -- research problems, deleted/missing scenes, most difficult part to write, etc

Research Problems:

There is a lot of information available regarding SEAL training, but my biggest challenge was digesting all of the information and presenting it from Danny's POV since he was not an actual participant. I relied heavily on Danny's senses, scents and sounds, as well as his emotional reactions. It's cool to describe a gun battle, but without sensory detail and how it impact your POV character, it can fall flat.

One of the hardest areas of research was on how to dismantle an IED for obvious reasons. I had to dig deep and read articles from embedded reporters during ride alongs and other first hand sources. Then I researched the terms and concepts I didn't understand. Oddly enough, I learned a lot from Science and Technology journals. But, I wasn't about to re-write actual situations, so I took what I learned and re-created original scenarios.

Most of the research I do is preliminary in nature. If I know I'm going to write a story about the team on a submarine, I'll read about what life aboard a sub is like before I outline, because research can spark a lot of ideas and new directions.

Deleted/Missing Scenes:

The set-up of the story was of this set of joint exercises between the British SBS and U.S Navy SEALs. Originally, the backbone of the story was going to include these joint exercises, which would have included more detailed combat situations. However, I it would have required a set of OCs for Steve's team and a set of OC's for the SBS team and I felt with 6-8 original characters running around, I would not be able to flesh any of them enough for the reader have a sense who they were. And I needed at least three characters with distinctive personalities for Danny to interact with, so I scrapped the SBS Team and stuck with the original SEAL Team.

If it had been a novel, it would have been so cool to have both teams compete with each other!

Most Difficult Scenes to Write:

The night time HALO jump was very challenging. I don't know how many times I re-wrote the scene where Steve and two other SEALs link arms, walk backward, and kind of fall/jump out. Not only was it tricky trying to describe the jump, but I wanted Danny to be both terrified and invigorated by what he witnessed. It was like riding a contest between his ID and Ego. He thought the jump was crazy, but he was little turned on by that kind of adrenaline rush.

The whole story was a tap dance of Danny trying to understand SEAL mentality, disapproving some of it, but also secretly enjoying seeing Steve in his natural element.

Lastly, I have very difficult time writing sex scenes. They are not my forte. It takes me forever, but I do try to improve. I'm never going to shoehorn a sex scene in my story, if the emotion and tone is right, then I'll write one whenever it feels natural.

sheafrotherdon asked --What's the plot hole that most bugs you in any of your fandoms, and how would you fix it? :D
Where do I begin? I try not to allow plot-holes to bug me because I don’t think network writers care about detail and continuity as much as the fans even though it should be a prerequisite. I’m aware writers each pen only a handful of episodes during the course of a year, but don’t they don’t compare notes with each other? Hello, are there no show bibles?

Moving on to answering the actual question. I guess H50’s Wo Fat/Shelburne/Champ Box is the giant black-hole of doom that bugs me the most.

Because if you watch Season One with the emphasis on the Yakuza-- none of it makes any sense with Joe faking Doris’s death, and oh, Shelbunre is the code name for the person who killed Wo Fat's father.

H50 is not the first and won't be the last when it comes to making it up as they go along. It happens when you don't keep the same core writers over time and the networks constantly have their say. But what a mess.

As far as fixing it, I don't think I can, but maybe I could salvage parts of it. Because Seasons 2,3, and 4 seem to tie together as a group if you dump most of season 1's mythology

Doris is CIA. She meets Wo Fat's father and works for him as his handler or partner. At some point she runs into John McGarrett, falls in love, and quits The Agency to raise a family. Except you can't walk away from the spy business.

Wo Fat Senior finds out about Doris, threatens her children, and she kills him in self defense. This begins a domino effect. All of her enemies will soon discover know she's alive, thus putting her husband and kids at risk. It just so happens during the same time period that John McGarrett begins his investigation into police corruption and The Yakuza.

Doris sacrifices her dream life for her family, using John's investigation as a smoke screen. Joe fakes her death and she escapes to Asia. Except, she doesn’t sit in a shack drinking tea. The CIA offers her an opportunity to work as Wo Fat’s handler, the prodigal son now taking over in his father's footsteps.

She agrees to work with Wo Fat to keep an eye on him because Wo Fat only knows the spy name of his father's killer. Shelbourne. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Doris returns to the life she loves while keeping her family safe.

Wo Fat does not kill her in 3.01 because Doris had saved him countless times and he might want to have a conversation with the only person he's ever trusted for over fifteen years before he actually shoots her.

If she does return in Season Four, I'd write it because Steve and Mary are put in danger from her enemies and she comes out of hiding to protect them. Instead of the other way around.

mischief5 asked for my Head canon for POI

I don't think this is what you were looking for, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Um, sorry?

I think Finch was right in “The Pilot”- "Sooner or later, both of us will probably wind up dead. Actually dead this time."

I think this show is destined to end with the passing of the baton to another group of individuals in need of redemption and atonement. Finch and Reese are never going to stop helping numbers until both of them are physically incapable. Sure there will be periods of stability and normal day-to-day enjoyment of life, of basking in the newest number saved, but the numbers will never end and each man's guilt from past misdeeds will never cease fueling their need and obligation to try to help others.

It is unsustainable. Finch and Reese are blood and bone, The Machine code and numbers. We've already seen enemies become allies, people we never dreamed helping Team Machine for either their own agenda or for personal demons. And I think this will continue to be the trend over the seasons, lives touched and thus motivated in helping someway. The members of Team Machine losing and gaining members, evolving so that one day, when John finally catches too many bullets or Finch is just a little too late --there will be another admin waiting in the wings and The Machine will find that person another helper or two or three.

And that is how the show will end. With someone other than Finch picking up the phone, the camera panning out, the dates fast-forwarding year by year until one day --The Machine crashes or is unplugged and we hear its final beep. Then the screen will fade to black.

I feel like I've been neglecting my LJ and this is the perfect solution.

I've seen this all over the place, and it looks like tremendous fun - my friends feed is going to be full of posts all December. That is an awesome thing!

So I'm joining in: Pick a date during December that hasn't been used yet and give me a topic, and I'll ramble on. It can be anything from fandom-related (specific characters, actors, storylines, episodes, writing, fic etc.) to life-related, to whatever you want. Current fandoms H50, Person of Interest, NCIS:LA,and Elementary. All older fandoms apply as well:)

They may be brief, or not, depending on the subject.

Also, I reserve the right to decline prompts that I don't feel equipped to meet (or if I feel I will only speak negatively on something, I might ask you for something else).

I'm amending the daily aspect of this. I know I could not possibly write something everyday between work, RL,and my epic AU of Doom. But I will do every other day! \o/

Pick a date below:

December 1 --Head canon for POI
December 3 --Steve and Danny's relationship
December 5 --What's the plot hole that most bugs you in any of your fandoms, and how would you fix it? :D
December 7 --anything related to "Beneath the Trident" - research problems, deleted/missing scenes, most difficult part to write, etc.
December 9 --make a soundtrack or fanmix of your favorite character or couple from H50
December 11 --your personal favorite headcanon in any of your fandoms. :)
December 13 --is there a character, from any show, you would have liked to seen more of
December 15 --Steve McGarrett.
December 17 --If you could write yourself into an episode fo H50 (or the whole series), what would you have your character be like? Special skill? Job? The bad guy? :)
December 19 --How about NCIS:LA? If you could write an episode, what would it be about and which character would it feature?
December 21 --favorite holiday moment, in generic terms to not make you uncomfortable sharing something private ... recapture the feeling it engendered in you and share it with us all.
December 23 --favorite movie of all time
December 25 --Steve McGarrett and his *feelings* during the holidays
December 27 --Tell me about something Steve McGarrett did in training that he's never been allowed to forget. :
December 29 --Jungles and/or the Pacific (anything about them).
December 31 --what part of 2013 will you miss most?
